Screening this week: Johnny Depp Week 4 (30/7)

26 Jul

Yo Ho Ho, week 4, and the penultimate week, of the Johnny Depp series. We jump 9 years on from Ed Wood to the first movie of the Disney franchise Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003). This movie, which is inspired by the Disneyland theme park ride, introduces to the screen Jack Sparrow played by Johnny Depp. Depp is said to have based Jack Sparrow on Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, and his performance in the TCBP earned him an Oscar nomination in 2004. A bit more trivia for you – Michael Keaton, Jim Carrey, and Christopher Walken were all considered for the role of Captain Jack Sparrow before Depp was cast. Though I’m a fan of Walken, I can’t imagine him or Keaton/Carrey having the same impact that Depp was able to achieve with his Jack Sparrow.
Screens this Thursday (30/7) at Palliser. Friends welcome (as always:))

Screening this week: Johnny Depp Week 3 (23/7)

18 Jul

Three weeks and our new series-based format is proving a winner. This week we move one year on from WEGG to Ed Wood, released  1994. This is probably a lesser seen work of Johnny Depp in which we see him reunite with Tim Burton to create a biopic of “the worst director of all time”, Edward D. Wood, Jr.

The film concentrates on the best-known period of Ed’s life in the 1950s, when he made Glen or Glenda (1953), Bride of the Monster (1955) and Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959), and focusing on both his transvestism and his touching friendship with the once great but now ageing and unemployed horror star Bela Lugosi.

Its probably important to note that is film is a comedy and is a bit strange which in itself reflects Ed’s life.

Screens this Thursday at Palliser 7:30pm.
