History of Film Series and a change of plans

13 Sep

We have a bit of a change up to the TNP calendar for the rest of the year. After we complete the September series we are going into hiatus until for a while. However we will break the hiatus with a couple special movie outings we have planned. We will let you know details about these well in advanced so keep your eyes peeled.

But in the mean time…the Brief History Continues. This week – 1940s.

Maltese Falcon (1941)
Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart), a private detective, gets involved in a murderous hunt for a valuable statuette.
Consensus: Suspenseful, labyrinthine, and brilliantly cast, The Maltese Falcon is one of the most influential noirs — as well as a showcase for Humphrey Bogart at his finest.
Runtime 1hr 40mins

Venue: Palliser, Starts 7:30pm

(Supre Brief) History of Film Continues…Modern Times

7 Sep
This week – 1930s
Mordern Times (1936)
Charlie Chaplin bid farewell to silent comedy with this funny and poignant masterpiece. Here Chaplin stars as a factory worker fed-up with the job and his tyrannical boss (who keeps an eye on all his employees via a big-brother TV monitor). When he meets and falls in love with an orphaned street waif, the two dream of a nice suburban existence…but the cops are never far behind, chasing the vagabond couple. A slapstick skewering of industrialized America, Modern Times is as politically incisive as it is laugh-out-loud hilarious.
Runtime: 1hr 27mins
Venue: 48 Palliser Rd, Roseneath. Starts 7:30pm this Thursday night.
Next Week its the 1940s and The Maltese Falcon with Humphrey Bogart

Coming Up Next: INCEPTION

13 Jul

Inception Poster

This week is a gab week for TNP before we pick things back up next week with INCEPTION. I’m really excited about this one guys as many of you are; it could be the best thing since The Matrix made us forget Keanu Reeves was a terrible actor until Matrix Reloaded opened.

The Plan
Thursday 22nd July – Opening Night @ the Embassy Theatre.
Ask all you mates if they want to come and RSVP by Friday 16th July. I’ll be buying tickets as soon as I can on Friday so don’t wait.

Plan B
If you can’t wait until next week, what about seeing Animal Kingdom as Part of the NZ International Film Festival. Email Justin (justinblass[at]gmail.com) for details about this Saturday’s screening at the Embassy

Finally…
We will be starting a new film series the week following Inception so stay tuned for more details.

July Series

22 Jun

We have canned the TV-to-Film series in favour of 3 vastly different films that we hope will capture your attention.
Films coming up are festival films from around the world. Its good to try something different every once a while eh?

So see you this Thursday as we head down the road of higher brow cinema. 7:30pm at 48 Palliser Rd Roseneath.

Ridley Scott Series Selection

25 May

We began our Ridley Scott Series last week at the Embassy Theater with his latest effort Robin Hood. An entertaining film and if you don’t take it too seriously you’ll enjoy it. Some of TNP found it too be rather weak in dialog and I think everyone would agree that plot wise their were some holes. It is a fresh take on the Robin Hood origin story and so a tick for breaking the out of the Prince of Thieves shadow.

This week we are back to Palliser to continue our new series.

A bit on Ridley:
Sir Ridley Scott (born 30 November 1937) is an English film director and producer known for his stylish visuals and an obsession for detail. His films include The Duellists (1977), Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982), Legend (1985), Thelma & Louise (1991), Gladiator (2000), Black Hawk Down (2001), Hannibal (2001), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), American Gangster (2007), and Robin Hood (2010).

Here are the films included in the series (check out Calender for dates):

New Film Series: Books to Film

23 Mar

Last week we concluded our Documentary series with Yes Men (which i give a solid 61/2 out of 10). I wasn’t so sure that a doco series would go down all that well as on the face of it, the concept didn’t seem all that exciting to start the year off. As it turned out, the TNP where an edger bunch and we could have screened a bunch more. Also seems we were the first ones in; as we finish the Documentary Edge Festival begins.

We now move on to our second series, Books to Film. We start with The Road and end with Iron Man 2 (which to say that its a book to film is a stretch I know). Everything in between will be selections from our hardworking Film Club organisers and you, the TNP community. if you haven’t already done so, sign-up to the newsletter for the weekly update and keep your eye on our Coming Attractions page.

Hands On A Hard Body: Documentary Series Continues

8 Mar

Our Documentary Series is nearing its end but not before you have had your say. This weeks movie is a TNP member’s pick from Nate Oaks, Hands On A Hard Body – Thanks for your suggestion Nate!
Hands On A Hard Body: Twenty-four contestants compete in an endurance/sleep deprivation contest in order to win a brand new Nissan Hardbody truck. The last person to remain standing with his or her hand on the truck wins. An absurd marketing gimmick at first glance, the contest proves to be much more. Trailer here
(If you like having your say, look out for your chance to make a film suggestion in upcoming series).

This Thursday, 7:30pm at Palliser. Leave a comment if your would like more details

(Some of the TNP will also be going to Alice in Wonderland this Tuesday 9:20pm at Reading Cinema’s. Head down if you want to join them).

Documentary Series Begins

8 Feb

Doco Series Wellington Film Club TNPWe are under way with our new Documentary Series.

Check our Coming Attractions to see what films are planed for the coming 6 weeks.

You will see that the last two weeks have question marks. Why? Well we are letting TNP members decide what films we watch.

To have your say, post on our website (below) or email Benn with your suggestion. The catch is that if your nominated film gets selected you will have to give a brief intro to the film for the TNP audience – scary eh (not really).
